The purpose of the Writing Investigations is to probe a learner’s strengths and weaknesses in relation to specific writing skills. They focus on discrete skills, and require small amounts of strongly-directed writing in contrast to the more extended writing tasks in the assessment tool.

The Investigations workbook contains 10 investigations which are marked using a writing guide or rubric that is contained in the administration and marking manual. Score ranges for each investigation activity are loosely linked to the Learning Progressions.

The investigations include activities that will help answer the following questions:

  • can the learner generate sufficient ideas to embark on a written task?
  • does the learner have a broad enough vocabulary to write in an engaging way?
  • does the learner adjust their writing to the needs of their intended reader?
  • can the learner write sentences that are grammatically correct?
  • does the learner have knowledge and controlled use of basic punctuation?
  • can the learner spell a range of high frequency words and words with common or difficult spelling patterns?
