11. Some advice about choosing the next step

Do:

  • Pick one of the ‘areas to work on’
  • Make sure that the area to work on relates to one or more of the strengths to build on.
  • Choose a next step that relates to audience and purpose, language and text features, or planning and composing - all relate to developing the quality of ideas
  • Use the Learning Progressions for Adult Literacy to help establish the learner’s next step

Don’t:

  • Pick punctuation, on its own, as a next step. Punctuation needs to be addressed in the context of developing understanding of sentence structure so its purpose is clear to the learner.
  • Focus on more than one ‘next step’ at a time. It will be confusing for your learners and difficult for you
