  • Spelling and vocabulary may demand a specific focus across the class, especially if there seems to be little knowledge of basic spelling patterns or if many of the class are English Language Learners.
  • Both spelling and vocabulary require explicit teaching, and learners need lots of opportunities to practise their use in written contexts. New vocabulary also needs to be reinforced through listening, speaking and reading.
    More ideas and suggestions for helping learners to improve their spelling can be found in pages 48 -50 of Teaching Adults to Write to Communicate: using the learning progressions. Pages 38 - 45 contain activities that will help learners develop and use familiar and topic specific vocabulary.
