This section is about getting learners to write. In the last section we looked at the importance of learners seeing themselves as writers and understanding what motivates them to strengthen their writing.

In this section we’ll explore ways to help learners find something to write about, and get under way. The underlying principle is that your instructional practice will be more effective if learners have opportunities to write texts that are meaningful to them.

The research evidence makes it clear that learners do not make much progress if they stick to de-contextualised activities at the word and sentence level.

They need to write, and do more writing.
