  • Educators should use the drafting and re-drafting process to focus on particular writing skills. Again, refer back to Module 2 in this series which looked at the deliberate acts of teaching that can be used to strengthen learners’ knowledge, skills and strategies.
  • Keep your interventions at a ‘big picture’ level first – e.g. around internal structure such as the order of ideas or paragraphing. Talk about cohesion, what makes a piece of writing ‘tight’ from start to finish.
  • Then drop into other technical skills such as spelling and punctuation.
  • At the same time, encourage learners to reflect on the process they are engaged in so that they will be able to apply it to other writing tasks.
