Try this now

As you work with learners to improve their text, take the opportunity to strengthen their writing knowledge and skills so that they are better able to draw on these in other contexts. Again it’s a good idea to do this as a collaborative activity.
Try the following activity to develop learners' awareness of different types of sentences. Start by telling learners that experimenting with the length of sentences can lead to better writing.

  • Ask the learners to pick out examples of very long sentences from their own work – or from that of their partners - and to copy and send them to you to copy on your computer, or to write them on the white board.
  • Use different colours to distinguish the different sentences. You only need 5 or 6 examples
  • Discuss how each might be made more effective by adding to the sentences or by reducing them in size. Discuss the place of commas and full stops in this exercise.
  • Use the terms compound and complex sentences. Review their understanding of conjunctions and phrases
  • Do the same exercise with the short sentences.
  • Use the term simple sentence. Review their understanding of subjects and verbs.
