When building literacy and numeracy skills using an embedded approach, we can start by identifying the literacy or numeracy related aims or goals within the vocational context. These aims can be quite broad statements, and they describe what you’d like the learner to be able to do or understand. These aims will be further broken down to develop more measurable learning outcomes, but it’s helpful to start with the bigger picture.

These teaching and learning aims or goals arise from the literacy and numeracy demands of the vocation. The examples below are demands that might be identified in Retail and Hospitality trades.

Numeracy Demand: Carry out percentage calculations (discounts, mark-ups, GST) and recognise whether or not the answer is reasonable.

 

Speaking and Listening Demand: Actively manage communications with customers and others

The literacy and numeracy demands become teaching and learning aims if diagnostic or formative assessment (knowing your learner) reveals that the learner does not already have the skills and knowledge to meet the demand.
