Key content

The consultative process used to develop the publication Whakatipuranga Arapiki Ako and some key messages from that process.

Some of the key findings and comments were that there are multiple literacies, not all of them are written text. And we started to get feedback around visual and non-visual literacies. For example, whakairo, weaving - they tell a story, they have a literacy of their own.

One of the clear findings or the messages that we got was that there are a number of literacies, types of literacies, both visual and text, and art forms were considered literacies for Māori. So that was the feedback that we got. We did... we delved into what that actually looked like in terms of whakairo, raranga – Māori art forms – and we wanted to know what those literacies or those examples of Māori literacy were telling us. So the stories, the whakapapa, the genealogy inside those art forms were examples of those literacies.

The report was also informed by other activities that we did. So it was around our kaimahi and their teaching, and the changes in their teaching, and the pedagogy they were using. Some of it came from some work that Matua Parkinson did with the hui, because he was the guest speaker at each of those hui, but he was also working with some of our young students working in the construction and building programme. And so for us that helped to inform the report because it provided some opportunity to look at what were positive ways of engaging or re-engaging Māori youth into education

As soon as I heard that Showbox was now available for multiple operating platforms, I downloaded and then started using it. Showbox is a great app and you can also use it without any delay. It is free, easy to use, and provides great content. http://www.showboxappz.info/
